In the Indian film industry, a playback singer records songs that are then used in movies. Nigam is widely considered one of the most versatile and successful singers in the history of Indian music. His vocal range is exceptionally wide, allowing him to master many different musical genres. He can perform romantic songs, breakup ballads, and classical pieces with equal skill. He also sings devotional music, patriotic songs, ghazals, qawwali, rock, and pop. This diversity has earned him nicknames like the "Lord of Chords."

Nigam's musical process involves incredible linguistic and stylistic flexibility. Throughout his career, he has recorded over 6,000 songs. He performs in more than 32 different languages. While he sings predominantly in Hindi and Kannada, his repertoire includes Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Odia, English, Assamese, Malayalam, Gujarati, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Tulu, Maithili, and Manipuri. He also releases non-film pop albums and devotional music for Hindu, Islamic, and Buddhist traditions. This ability to switch between languages and cultural styles is a core part of his professional identity.

His career is marked by several distinct stages of growth and influence. He began his journey in the early 1990s. During this time, he was often overshadowed by other famous singers like Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. He gained significant recognition through television serial songs and hit film tracks like "Sandese Aate Hai" and "Yeh Dil Deewana." The late 1990s saw the popularity of his album Deewana. The 2000s represented his career peak. During this decade, he released massive hits such as "Suraj Hua Maddham" and "Kal Ho Naa Ho." Since 2010, he has continued to work through international collaborations and major live concerts.

Nigam's personal history provided the foundation for his musical mastery. He was born on July 30, 1973, in Faridabad, Haryana, to Agam Kumar Nigam and Shobha Nigam. He began singing at the age of four. At that young age, he joined his father on stage to perform songs by the legendary Mohammad Rafi. He spent his youth accompanying his father at weddings and parties. At age 19, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood. To refine his talent, he underwent formal training with the Hindustani classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.

His professional achievements are backed by numerous prestigious awards and high rankings. In 2004, he won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the song "Kal Ho Naa Ho." He has also won two Filmfare Awards, two Filmfare Awards South, and four IIFA Awards. In 2014, he received an Oscar nomination for the film Jal. In 2022, the Indian government honored him with the Padma Shri, which is the country's fourth-highest civilian award. His global reach is evident through his rankings on the Billboard Uncharted charts in 2013.

Nigam's influence extends to both his peers and the broader music industry. He is often called the "Modern Rafi" because his voice texture reminds listeners of Mohammad Rafi. Many famous contemporary singers, such as Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh, cite him as an inspiration or a favorite.
