Bhansali’s professional journey involved many different technical roles. He began his career as an assistant to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He served as an assistant director for the film Parinda in 1989. He also worked as a writer and assistant choreographer for 1942: A Love Story. Later, he studied editing at the Film and Television Institute of India. Today, he manages multiple creative tasks for his projects. He directs, writes, and composes music. He also operates his own company called Bhansali Productions. In 2024, he expanded his reach by launching a music label named Bhansali Music.

His personal history has deeply shaped his artistic themes. He was born on 24 February 1963, in Bhuleshwar, South Bombay. He grew up in a Gujarati-Jain family. His father, Navin, worked as a film producer. However, financial difficulties led to his father's struggle with alcoholism. His mother, Leela, sewed clothes to support the family. Navin eventually died of cirrhosis. Because of this, Bhansali adopted his mother's name as his middle name. He frequently honors his father through his cinematic work. For example, the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam features a character who speaks to the sky. This was inspired by a habit Bhansali had as a child. His father's life also inspired the film Devdas.

Bhansali has achieved significant critical and commercial success. He has received seven National Film Awards throughout his career. He has also won thirteen Filmfare Awards. In 2015, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri. This is the fourth-highest civilian award in India.

His film Devdas, released in 2002, was a major milestone. It was the highest-grossing film of that year. It also earned a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language. His film Black won him a National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

His career has included both massive hits and professional setbacks. While many films succeeded, Saawariya and Guzaarish were box-office flops. He also experienced success in the world of opera. In 2008, he staged Padmavati at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The show received a fifteen-minute standing ovation. He also found success as a producer. The film Rowdy Rathore was a major commercial blockbuster. His film Mary Kom was also a critical and commercial success. It was the first Hindi film to premiere on the opening night of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Some of his most famous works are adaptations of existing stories. Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela was an adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This film earned ₹2.02 billion at the box office. Bajirao Mastani was another major period drama. It was based on the love story of Peshwa Baji Rao I and his wife Mastani. This film was one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. He also directed Padmaavat, which stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmini. This film faced challenges from groups who disagreed with his historical portrayal. Some members of the Shri Rajput Karni Sena protested during the production in Jaipur.

Bhansali's work connects to many different cultural traditions. He is trained in Odissi, which is a classical Indian dance form. He speaks Gujarati at home and enjoys Gujarati food and literature. His films often bridge the gap between traditional stories and modern cinema. He continues to create large-scale projects like the series Heeramandi. His career shows how personal history can influence grand visual storytelling.
