This means she can master many different musical styles and emotional tones. She has recorded songs in various Indian and foreign languages. Her work has earned her many prestigious accolades. She is also recognized as one of the most prolific singers in India.

Her musical education began very early in her childhood. Ghoshal started learning music at the age of four. At age six, she began formal training in Hindustani classical music. This is a traditional system of music from Northern India. Her mother, Sarmistha Ghoshal, supported her by playing the tanpura during rehearsals. The tanpura is a long-necked stringed instrument used to provide a drone. Ghoshal also underwent specialized training with the composer Kalyanji for 18 months. Later, she continued her classical studies in Mumbai with Mukta Bhide. In 1995, she won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition in New Delhi.

During a children's special episode, her performance caught the attention of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali. His mother, Leela Bhansali, had watched the show and urged him to see the performance. Bhansali felt her voice possessed the specific innocence required for the character Paro in his film Devdas. This film was released in 2002. Ghoshal recorded five songs for the movie, including the hit "Bairi Piya." While recording, she balanced her career with her education by bringing schoolbooks to the studio.

The success of Devdas led to a rapid rise in her career. For her work on "Bairi Piya," she won a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She also received the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. To avoid being limited to only one type of music, Ghoshal intentionally explored different genres. She performed traditional semi-classical songs and then moved toward more modern styles. For example, her songs in the film Jism helped her develop a versatile image. This prevented her from being stereotyped as only a classical singer. She later collaborated with many different music directors to expand her reach.

Ghoshal's career is marked by significant milestones and diverse musical types. She has recorded everything from jazzy numbers to soft romantic tunes. In the album Tumsa Nahin Dekha, she experimented with her entire range of singing capabilities. She has also contributed to devotional albums, such as Banomali Re and Krishna Bina Ache Ke. Her reach extends beyond Hindi cinema into other Indian languages. She made her Kannada debut in the movie Paris Pranaya in 2003. She also recorded songs for Malayalam cinema, such as in the film Big B.

A major cultural milestone occurred in 2017 at the Madame Tussauds Museum in Delhi. Ghoshal became the first Indian singer to have a wax figure displayed there.

Today, Ghoshal remains a central figure in the Indian music industry. She serves as a judge on several television reality shows. Her ability to bridge the gap between classical traditions and popular film music is highly valued. This connection allows her to maintain relevance across different generations of listeners. She continues to work with a wide array of composers and performers. Her journey from a young student in Rawatbhata to a global icon demonstrates the power of formal training and dedication.
