He is a multi-instrumentalist, meaning he plays many different musical instruments. He also works as a singer, songwriter, and philanthropist. Rahman is famous for his work in Indian cinema, specifically in Tamil and Hindi films. He has also composed music for international Hollywood productions. Because of his immense talent, he has earned nicknames like "Isai Puyal" and the "Mozart of Madras." His career is defined by a unique ability to blend diverse musical traditions into a single, cohesive sound.

Rahman’s musical process involves a sophisticated blend of technology and tradition. He is particularly interested in the synthesizer, which he views as the perfect combination of music and technology. He uses this tool alongside instruments like the piano, harmonium, and guitar. To support his work, he established high-tech recording environments. He started with Panchathan Record Inn, a studio located in his backyard. In 2005, he expanded his reach by creating AM Studios in Kodambakkam, Chennai. These facilities are among the most advanced recording and mixing studios in Asia.

His musical style is characterized by extreme versatility. Rahman combines Western classical music with traditional Indian styles, such as Carnatic and Hindustani music. He also incorporates elements of jazz, reggae, and rock into his scores. For the film Sangamam, he used Carnatic vocals and the veena alongside rock guitar and jazz. In his work for the film Iruvar, he blended these different genres to create specific moods. He has even researched Chinese and Japanese classical music to score the film Warriors of Heaven and Earth. This ability to traverse different musical worlds is a hallmark of his artistry.

Rahman's life began in Madras, Tamil Nadu, where he was born on January 6, 1967. His birth name was Dileep Kumar Rajagopala. His father, R. K. Shekhar, was a film score composer and conductor for Malayalam films. Rahman began studying the piano at the age of four and assisted his father in the studio. Following his father's death when Rahman was nine, the family relied on the rental of musical equipment for income. This responsibility required him to work, often causing him to miss school. He eventually left formal schooling to pursue music as a full-time career. In 1989, at age 23, he converted to Islam and changed his name. He chose the name Allah Rakha Rahman, finding a connection to the name suggested by a Hindu astrologer.

His professional breakthrough occurred in 1992 with the Tamil film Roja. This film was a major success and earned him his first National Film Award. Following Roja, he worked on several notable films, including Bombay and Gentleman. The soundtrack for Bombay was particularly significant, selling 15 million copies worldwide. In 2008, his work on the film Slumdog Millionaire brought him massive international recognition. For this film, he won two Academy Awards, including Best Original Score. He also won Best Original Song for the track "Jai Ho."

Throughout his career, Rahman has accumulated a vast collection of prestigious honors. He has received six National Film Awards and two Grammy Awards. His accolades also include a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, and fifteen Filmfare Awards. In 2010, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Bhushan, the nation's third-highest civilian award. He has also been recognized by academic institutions. He received honorary doctorates from the Berklee College of Music and Aligarh Muslim University. In 2009, Time magazine included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Beyond his musical achievements, Rahman is a dedicated humanitarian. He uses his platform to raise money and donate to various charities and causes. This philanthropic work complements his role as a cultural ambassador. His influence extends into the world of film direction as well. In 2017, he made his debut as a director and writer for the film Le Musk.
