The group consists of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani, and Loy Mendonsa. They are famous for composing music for film soundtracks. Their work spans over 50 soundtracks in five different languages. These languages include Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Marathi, and English. Because of their impact, they are often called the "AAA" of the Hindi film music industry. This nickname refers to the first letters of their names.

Each member brings a unique musical background to the trio. Shankar Mahadevan is the primary vocalist. He studied both Hindustani and Carnatic classical music. Interestingly, he was a software engineer who worked on Oracle Version Six before pursuing music. Ehsaan Noorani is the group's guitarist. He studied at the Musicians' Institute in Los Angeles. He is the only Indian musician to have an endorsed signature series of Fender guitars. Loy Mendonsa plays the piano, bass guitar, and harmonica. He began his career writing music for television shows like "Quiz Time" and "Fauji."

The trio formed through a gradual process of collaboration. Ehsaan and Loy met in 1989 while composing advertising jingles. They later met Shankar when he sang for a Pepsi advertisement directed by Mukul Anand. Their first attempt at film composition was for the movie "Dus." However, the director passed away, and the film was never completed. This early period was difficult, as their subsequent films like "Rockford" and "Bhopal Express" did not find much success. They finally entered the mainstream film industry with the musical hit "Mission Kashmir."

Their career reached a turning point in 2001 with the film "Dil Chahta Hai." This was the directorial debut of Farhan Akhtar. The trio was originally not the first choice for the music. However, they composed a title track that Farhan Akhtar liked very much. This success led to a long-term partnership with Excel Entertainments. It also earned them their first nomination for a Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. This era established them as major figures in Bollywood.

Following this success, the trio achieved massive commercial milestones. In 2003, they composed the soundtrack for "Kal Ho Naa Ho." This became the highest-selling Indian music album of that year. Their work on "Bunty Aur Babli" in 2005 also won them a second Filmfare Award. They are known for creating songs that become massive hits, such as "Kajra Re."

Their music often dominates the charts and wins numerous prestigious awards.

The year 2007 was a particularly significant period for the group. They released music for several films, including "Salaam-e-Ishq" and "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom." Even when the movies received mixed reviews, the music often remained a sensation. They also co-produced the album "Johnny Gaddaar," which was a first for the Bollywood industry. Their soundtrack for "Taare Zameen Par" also achieved cult status. They continued this momentum with the successful film "Rock On!!" in 2008.

Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy is recognized for blending diverse musical styles. For the film "My Name Is Khan," they combined Western bar blues and techno with Indian Sufi and Hindustani styles. Their music has even reached international recognition. For example, the track "Aaj Ki Raat" was included in the Academy Award-winning soundtrack for "Slumdog Millionaire." The trio also incorporates new voices into their work. Loy's daughter, Alyssa Mendonsa, made her debut with the song "Uff Teri Adaa." Through these varied sounds, the trio continues to influence the landscape of Indian film music.
