Omkar Prasad Nayyar was a highly influential figure in Indian cinema. He worked as a music director, composer, and producer. Many people called him the "Rhythm King." This nickname came from his unique ability to create music with strong, catchy beats. His work was known for being both rhythmic and melodious. He helped shape the sound of Hindi film music during the mid-20th century.

Nayyar did not receive any formal training in music. Instead, he built his career through practical experience and talent. He began by composing background scores for the film Kaneez in 1949. He became a full music director with the film Aasmaan in 1952. He later worked on major films like Baaz in 1953. His career grew when director Guru Dutt hired him for films like Aar Paar in 1954 and C.I.D. in 1956.

His musical style involved working closely with specific singers to create a signature sound. He worked extensively with singers like Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi. He played a major role in the career of Asha Bhosle. He also worked with Kishore Kumar on hits like Raagini in 1958. Nayyar even started a new tradition in the industry. He began assigning full, three-minute songs to comedians. This allowed actors like Johnny Walker and Om Prakash to have musical moments.

Nayyar's career was marked by significant professional achievements and awards. In 1958, he won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director. This honor was for his work on the film Naya Daur. He also worked with director Nasir Hussain on romantic scores. These scores were used in films like Tumsa Nahin Dekha in 1957. Some of his music remained popular for decades. A song he composed in 1958 was reused in the 1973 film Taxi Driver.

Despite his success, Nayyar faced challenges with official institutions. During one decade, All India Radio banned many of his songs. The broadcaster felt his music was too "trendy" for their standards. He also experienced changes in his professional relationships. After a disagreement with Mohammed Rafi, he began working with singer Mahendra Kapoor. He and Asha Bhosle eventually stopped working together in 1974. This ended a long period of musical collaboration.

Nayyar's personal life was complex and sometimes difficult. He was born in Lahore, which is in present-day Pakistan. He married Saroj Nayyar, who was a stage dancer. They had four children: three daughters and one son. In his later years, Nayyar became estranged from his family. He moved out of his home in Mumbai in 1979. He lived in various places, including hotels and as a paying guest.

He passed away on January 28, 2007, following a heart attack. At the time of his death, he was living in Thane. Many famous figures from the film industry sent tributes to honor him. These included singers and actors like Lata Mangeshkar and Shammi Kapoor. To recognize his lasting impact, India Post issued a commemorative stamp in 2013. His musical legacy continues to be remembered in Indian culture.
