Suraiya was a legendary figure in the history of Indian cinema. She was a dual-threat performer who excelled as both an actress and a playback singer. A playback singer is an artist who records songs to be used in films. Suraiya often sang the songs for her own characters on screen. Because of her immense talent, she became one of the most celebrated stars of her era. Between the mid-1940s and early 1950s, she reached the height of her fame. She was so highly valued that she earned more pay than her male counterparts.

Suraiya's career began when she was a very young child. She made her first appearance as a child artist in the 1936 film Madame Fashion. Her acting debut as a leading lady occurred in the 1941 film Taj Mahal. In that production, she played the historic role of Mumtaz Mahal. Her musical journey also started early through children's radio programs at All India Radio. At age six, she sang alongside future legends Raj Kapoor and Madan Mohan. While she had no formal professional training, her natural talent was undeniable. By age 12, she sang her first song for the film Nai Duniya in 1942.

Her rise to stardom involved a series of successful collaborations and film releases. Music director Naushad Ali became a vital mentor to her. He chose her to sing for the film Sharda in 1942 when she was only 13. Under his guidance, she became a full-fledged singing star. She appeared in several high-grossing films like Anmol Ghadi in 1946 and Parwana in 1947. The film Parwana was especially important because its songs made her a genuine singing-film star. She also worked frequently with actors such as Prithviraj Kapoor and K. L. Saigal. These partnerships helped her build a massive following across India.

Suraiya experienced a massive surge in popularity during the late 1940s. Between 1948 and 1949, she appeared in over 18 different films. Many of these were the highest-grossing releases of those years. Notable hits included Vidya, Pyar Ki Jeet, Dillagi, and Badi Behen. During this period, she was often the first name listed in film credits. This placement indicated her status as a top-tier superstar. Her popularity was so intense that large crowds often gathered outside her home. During the premiere of Badi Behen, the crowds were so large that police had to use baton charges to manage them.

Her career was marked by both immense commercial success and critical acclaim. One of her most famous roles was playing Moti Begum in the 1954 film Mirza Ghalib. This performance earned her praise from two Prime Ministers of India. Because of her skill, she was given honorary titles by the public. People called her Malika-e-Husn, which means queen of beauty. They also called her Malika-e-Adakari, meaning queen of acting. These titles reflected her dominance in the film industry during her heyday.

Suraiya's personal life was rooted in her family and her upbringing. She was born Suraiya Jamal Sheikh on 15 June 1929 in Lahore. Her family moved to Mumbai, then called Bombay, when she was one year old. They lived at Krishna Mahal on Marine Drive.
