Rushdi possessed an incredible range of musical styles. He could sing romantic ballads and pop music with equal skill. He was also talented in ghazal, disco, and rock and roll. He mastered classical music, qawwali-style songs, and patriotic numbers. He even performed comedic songs for various characters. In 1966, he sang "Ko Ko Korina" for the film Armaan. This track is considered South Asia's first modern pop song. His ability to switch between these genres was unprecedented.

His musical journey began in Hyderabad Deccan. He was born into a religious and conservative family in 1934. His father, Syed Manzoor Mohammad, taught Arabic, Islamic history, and Persian. After his father died, Rushdi turned to the radio for musical inspiration. He was not born into a musical family. He learned the basics of music at a local academy. There, he studied under composers M. A. Rauf and Iqbal Qureshi. He later received classical training from Ustad Nathu Khan.

Rushdi's career was defined by massive productivity and linguistic variety. He recorded approximately 5,000 film songs for 583 released films. He sang in Urdu, English, Punjabi, Bengali, Sindhi, and Gujarati. In 1954, he recorded the official National Anthem of Pakistan. This year also marked his move to Karachi. He began participating in variety shows and radio programs. These early successes served as stepping stones for his playback career. He achieved unprecedented success from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s.

He was a favorite for many different types of film actors. Music experts noted his voice suited heroes and comedians alike. He provided playback for stars like Waheed Murad and Nadeem. His pairing with Waheed Murad was particularly popular. He also lent his voice to character actors and comedians. This included performers like Munawar Zarif and Lehri. His voice was often described as being "tailor-made" for the film industry. He worked with legendary music directors like Nisar Bazmi and Sohail Rana.

Rushdi received many prestigious honors during and after his life. He won five Nigar Awards for his singing excellence. He was also given the "Best Singer of the Millennium" title. In 2003, President Pervez Musharraf awarded him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. This title means "star of excellence" and recognizes distinguished merit in arts. A 2016 survey by Asian Woman magazine named him a "darling singer of all time." His influence even reached American television in 2022. The song "Ko Ko Korina" appeared in the opening of the series Ms. Marvel.

Despite his success, Rushdi faced challenges in his later years. He suffered from poor health toward the end of his life. He died of a heart attack at age 48. His passing marked the end of a massive era in Pakistani cinema. The film industry faced changes in the 1980s as well. The rise of Punjabi films changed the demand for male playback singers. However, his musical legacy remains a cornerstone of South Asian culture.
