Many people called him the "Magician of Voice." He was famous for his ability to sing very high notes with ease. His voice was special because it could change to match any actor. He could sound romantic, funny, or even very sad. This skill made him a vital part of the golden age of Pakistani film music. People across South Asia still remember him for his incredible talent and versatility.

His singing style covered many different types of music. He could perform pop, disco, and rock and roll with great energy. He was also skilled in classical music and qawwali-style songs. He sang poetic songs called ghazals and even patriotic numbers. In 1966, he sang "Ko Ko Korina" for the film Armaan. This song is considered the very first pop song in South Asia. He could move between these styles perfectly to fit the mood of a movie.

Rushdi did not come from a family of musicians. He was born in 1934 in Hyderabad Deccan to a religious family. His father, Syed Manzoor Mohammad, was a teacher of Arabic and Persian. After his father died, Rushdi began listening to music on the radio. He learned the basics of music at a local academy in Hyderabad. There, he studied under composers M. A. Rauf and Iqbal Qureshi. Later, he received classical training from Ustad Nathu Khan.

His career was full of huge numbers and great success. He recorded about 5,000 film songs for 583 different movies. He sang in many languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Sindhi, and Gujarati. In 1954, he helped record the official National Anthem of Pakistan. He won five Nigar Awards during his life. In 2003, the president of Pakistan gave him the Sitara-i-Imtiaz. This award means "star of excellence" and honors great work in the arts.

Even many years after his death, his music stays important. He died of a heart attack at the age of 48. His songs still connect with people all over the world. For example, his song "Ko Ko Korina" was used in an American TV show called Ms. Marvel in 2022. He was also named the "Best Singer of the Millennium" and a "darling singer of all time."
