Rafi is considered one of the most influential singers in the history of the Indian subcontinent. His career was defined by incredible versatility and a massive vocal range. He could master many different musical styles with ease. These included fast, peppy songs and slow, romantic melodies. He also sang patriotic songs, qawwalis, ghazals, bhajans, and complex classical music.

One of Rafi's greatest skills was his ability to mold his voice. He would adapt his tone to match the persona of the actor on screen. This meant his voice felt like a natural part of the character. He recorded songs for over 1,000 Hindi films. He also recorded in many different Indian languages. His primary strengths were in Urdu and Punjabi. However, his talent spanned many other languages like Konkani, Assamese, Bengali, and Tamil. He even recorded in foreign languages such as English, Arabic, and Persian.

Rafi's musical journey began in the village of Kotla Sultan Singh.

He was the second eldest of six brothers. His family was a Punjabi Bhatti Jat Muslim family. As a young boy, he learned by imitating the chants of a traveling fakir. He later received formal training in classical music. He studied under teachers such as Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan and Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo. At age 13, he gave his first public performance in Lahore. In 1941, he made his debut as a playback singer in the Punjabi film Gul Baloch.

In 1944, Rafi moved to Bombay, which is now known as Mumbai. He lived in a small ten-by-ten-foot room in the Bhendi Bazar area. He worked hard to find opportunities in the film industry. He eventually recorded his first Hindi film song for the movie Gaon Ki Gori in 1945. Early in his career, he was influenced by singers like G. M. Durrani. Over time, Rafi moved away from imitating others. He developed a unique and unmistakable singing style of his own. This evolution helped him become a leading star in the industry.

Rafi formed many famous partnerships with music directors. He worked closely with Naushad Ali on 149 songs. This partnership helped establish him as a prominent figure in Hindi cinema. He also had a very successful relationship with the duo Shankar–Jaikishan. He sang 341 songs for them and won three Filmfare Awards for their music. His partnership with O. P. Nayyar was also highly significant. Nayyar once remarked that without Rafi, he would not have been a composer. Rafi's most frequent collaborators were the duo Laxmikant–Pyarelal. He recorded 388 songs for them, which was his highest number for any single duo.

Beyond his technical skill, Rafi was known for his deep kindness. He often used his success to help others in the music community. He sometimes sang for free to support small-time music directors. For example, he charged only one rupee to sing for Nisar Bazmi. He also provided financial assistance to producers who were struggling. This selfless nature made him deeply respected by his peers. He was a man who gave to others without thinking of the returns. This generosity was a core part of his identity.

His professional achievements were recognized with many prestigious honors. Rafi won six Filmfare Awards throughout his career. He also received one National Film Award in India. In 1967, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri award. In 2001, he was named the "Best Singer of the Millennium" by Stardust magazine. A 2013 poll by CNN-IBN even voted him the Greatest Voice in Hindi Cinema. Throughout his life, he recorded as many as 7,000 songs. His soulful voice remains a vital part of Indian musical culture.
