His work is celebrated for a distinct visual style. This style often includes beautifully photographed musical sequences and a unique use of back-lighting. He has successfully explored a wide variety of genres, including romance, terrorism war dramas, and epic historical stories.

Creating a film requires a complex sequence of professional roles and technical skills. As a screenwriter, Ratnam develops the original stories and the dialogue spoken by characters. As a director, he oversees the entire creative vision of the production. He also acts as a producer through his company, Madras Talkies, which is based in Alwarpet, Chennai. The process involves collaborating with many specialists. For example, he often works with music directors to create scores that define the mood of a film. He also utilizes cinematographers to handle the camera work and lighting that make his films visually striking.

Ratnam's filmography includes several distinct types of stories that have defined his career. He is well known for his romantic trilogy, which consists of Mouna Ragam (1986), Alai Payuthey (2000), and O Kadhal Kanmani (2015). He also explores intense social and political themes. His film Bombay (1995) dealt with romance amidst religious tension, and his crime drama Thalapathi (1991) was loosely based on the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. More recently, he moved into the genre of epic historical drama. His films Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023) were based on the famous Indian epic written by Kalki Krishnamurthy.

His path to cinematic greatness was not immediate. Born on June 2, 1956, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Ratnam grew up in a family closely tied to film production. His father, S. Gopalaratnam, was a film distributor, and his uncle, "Venus" Krishnamurthy, was a producer. Interestingly, Ratnam did not initially care for films and even viewed them as a waste of time. He completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in finance from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. After graduating in 1977, he worked as a management consultant in Madras. He finally entered the industry in 1983 with the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi, which won him a Best Screenplay Award from the Karnataka State Government.

After his debut, Ratnam faced a period of professional struggle. Several of his early films did not succeed, which left him with fewer job offers. He worked in Telugu and Malayalam cinema before finding his major breakthrough in 1986. The film Mouna Ragam, a realistic portrayal of an urban Tamil couple, won him his first Filmfare Best Director Award. This success established him as a leading filmmaker in Tamil cinema. He continued this momentum with the critically acclaimed Nayakan in 1987. This film was inspired by the American crime film The Godfather and told the story of an underworld leader in Bombay.

Ratnam's impact on the industry is reflected in his many prestigious awards. He has won seven National Film Awards and multiple Filmfare Awards, including seven Filmfare Awards South. In 2002, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri, a high civilian award, for his contributions to film. His film Nayakan was even included in Time magazine's All-Time 100 Greatest Movies in 2005. His recent historical epic, Ponniyin Selvan: I, became a massive commercial success. It ranked as the 35th highest-grossing film in India and the 5th highest-grossing Tamil film.

Throughout his career, Ratnam has also navigated significant personal and social challenges. In 1995, his home was targeted with homemade bombs following the release of his film Bombay. This film portrayed the romance between a Hindu man and a Muslim woman, which caused opposition from certain groups. Beyond his personal safety, Ratnam has engaged with broader social issues. In 2019, he was one of many who wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express concern regarding communal violence in India. His life and work remain deeply connected to the complex social and cultural fabric of India.
