Making a movie involves many different steps and roles. Bhansali started his career as an assistant to Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He worked as an assistant director on the film Parinda in 1989. He also worked as a writer and assistant choreographer for 1942: A Love Story. Later, he studied editing at the Film and Television Institute of India. Today, he directs, writes, and composes music. He even runs his own company called Bhansali Productions. He also launched a music label named Bhansali Music in 2024.

Bhansali's life has influenced many of his artistic choices. He was born on 24 February 1963 in Bhuleshwar, South Bombay. He grew up in a Gujarati-Jain family. His father, Navin, was a film producer. Because of hard times, his mother, Leela, sewed clothes to support the family. Bhansali chose to use his mother's name as his middle name. He often honors his father in his films. For example, a character in his film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam speaks to the sky. This was inspired by a habit Bhansali had as a child.

His career is filled with many important achievements and awards. He has won seven National Film Awards for his work. He also has thirteen Filmfare Awards. In 2015, the Government of India gave him the Padma Shri. This is the fourth-highest civilian award in the country.

His film Devdas was a huge success in 2002. It was even nominated for a BAFTA Award. His film Black won him a National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.

Bhansali's work connects to many different parts of culture. He is trained in Odissi, which is a type of dance. At home, he speaks Gujarati and loves Gujarati food and literature. His films often adapt famous stories. For instance, Ram-Leela was an adaptation of the play Romeo and Juliet. Some of his big movies have faced challenges from groups who disagreed with his history. Even with these hard moments, his films like Padmaavat remain very famous. He continues to share his stories through movies and television series.
