Sanjeev Kumar was one of the most talented actors in the history of Indian cinema. He was famous for his versatility, which means he could play many different kinds of people. He did not just play one type of hero. Instead, he chose roles that were often difficult or unusual. He could make audiences laugh in funny movies like Angoor. He could also make them feel deep emotions in serious dramas. People remember him for bringing a sense of truth and depth to every character he played.

His acting was special because he was not afraid to experiment. Even when he was quite young, he often played much older men on stage. At age 22, he played an old man in a play called All My Sons. He later played a 60-year-old character in a play titled Damru. In movies, he took on roles that were not always glamorous. For example, in the film Koshish, he played a person who could not hear or speak. This role required great skill and helped him win a National Film Award.

Kumar's journey began long before he became a movie star. He was born Harihar Jethalal Jariwala on July 9, 1938, in Surat. He grew up in a Gujarati Brahmin family and moved to Bombay when he was young. He started his career as a stage actor with groups like the IPTA. He eventually went to film school, which led him to the world of Bollywood. He made his first film appearance in a small role in the 1960 movie Hum Hindustani. His first major role as a lead actor came in the film Nishan in 1965.

Throughout his career, Kumar worked in many different languages and won many prizes. He spoke Gujarati, Hindi, and English fluently. He won two National Film Awards for Best Actor for the films Dastak and Koshish. He also won several Filmfare Awards for movies like Arjun Pandit. He starred in famous blockbuster films such as Sholay and Trishul. Many of his successes came from Hindi remakes of popular South Indian films. These movies helped him become a household name across the country.

Today, people still honor his incredible legacy in many ways. He is listed among the greatest actors of all time in several polls. In 2013, India released a special postage stamp to honor him. In his hometown of Surat, a road is named Sanjeev Kumar Marg. There is also a school and a large auditorium named after him. Even after he passed away in 1985, many of his films were released to the public. His life showed that a great actor can leave a lasting mark on the world.
