He was a prolific actor, film producer, and director. His career in Hindi cinema spanned five decades. During this time, he appeared in more than 80 films. Dutt was recognized as one of the finest actors in Indian history. He was famous for a unique acting style. He also used his films to deliver impactful social messages. His contributions earned him several prestigious honors. He received three Filmfare Awards, including two for Best Actor. In 1968, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri. This is the nation's fourth highest civilian award.

Dutt's entry into the film industry followed a disciplined path. Before acting, he hosted a radio show called Lipton Ki Mehfil on Radio Ceylon. In 1953, director Ramesh Saigal met him while Dutt was reporting on a film. Saigal was impressed by Dutt's voice and personality. He offered Dutt a role in an upcoming project. However, Dutt declined the offer initially. He promised his mother he would finish his education first. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1954. After graduating, he made his film debut in 1955 with Railway Platform. Saigal suggested the screen name "Sunil Dutt" to avoid confusion with actor Balraj Sahni.

His rise to stardom was rapid and driven by major cinematic successes. In 1956, he starred in the family drama Ek Hi Raasta. This film was a major commercial success. In 1957, he appeared in the epic drama Mother India. This film was a massive blockbuster. It was the highest-grossing film of 1957. In this movie, Dutt played Birju, the rebellious son of Radha. His performance was so impactful that Birju is considered Bollywood's first anti-hero. The film was even dubbed into European languages like Spanish, French, and Russian. It was later featured in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.

Throughout the 1960s, Dutt demonstrated incredible versatility in his roles. He moved between romantic leads, intense dramas, and even comedic parts. In 1963, he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor. This was for his role as a bandit in Mujhe Jeene Do. He also experimented with directing and producing. In 1964, he directed and starred in the film Yaadein. This was an experimental film where he was the only actor. It earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the fewest actors in a narrative film. He also found success in the 1965 ensemble film Waqt, which became a cult classic. In 1968, he showed his comedic range in the musical comedy Padosan. He played a character named Bhola, a simpleton with great innocence.

Dutt's personal life was also closely tied to the film industry. In 1958, he married his Mother India co-star, Nargis. They had three children, one of whom was the actor Sanjay Dutt. As the film industry changed in the late 1960s, Dutt adapted his career. He shifted toward action-oriented roles and occasional negative characters. He continued to find success with films like Heera in 1973 and the horror film Nagin in 1976. Even in his later years, he remained active in the industry. He appeared in the film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., which was his final film.

Beyond the screen, Dutt was a dedicated public servant. In 1984, he joined the Indian National Congress political party. He was elected to the Parliament of India for five different terms. He represented the Mumbai North West constituency.

His political career allowed him to serve the country in a different capacity than his acting.

Sunil Dutt's life was marked by both great achievement and significant personal history. He was born in 1929 in the Punjab Province of British India. His family faced great hardship during the Partition of India when he was 18. A Muslim friend named Yakub helped his family relocate safely to India. This experience of displacement was a major part of his early life. He eventually resettled in the village of Mandauli. His journey from a student in Bombay to a national icon is a significant part of Indian cultural history. In 1995, he received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for his fifty years of work.
