Chopra is celebrated for his mastery of the romantic genre. He was particularly known for creating films with strong female leads. His work often blended deep emotion with grand, visual storytelling. Many critics consider him one of the greatest filmmakers in Indian history. His influence helped define the aesthetic of modern Indian film.

Chopra developed a specific cinematic approach known as the "Yash Chopra style." This method focused on heroine-oriented narratives and romantic themes.

His films frequently depicted the lifestyles of the social elite. He used melodious music to drive the emotional beats of his stories. A key element was filming musical sequences in beautiful foreign locations. He often used the landscapes of Switzerland for these scenes. This practice made Switzerland a major destination for Indian tourists. This style helped rejuvenate the romantic musical genre in Bollywood.

The evolution of his career can be seen through several distinct phases. He began as an assistant director to I. S. Johar and B. R. Chopra. His directorial debut was the 1959 melodrama Dhool Ka Phool. In 1965, he directed Waqt, which pioneered the ensemble cast concept. This term refers to a film featuring many famous stars at once. In 1970, he founded his own company, Yash Raj Films. This allowed him to produce his own independent works. He later moved from action-oriented films to musical romances. He also transitioned from directing to focusing solely on production for seven years.

Chopra's history is deeply tied to his family and the Partition of India. He was born in Lahore in 1932 into a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family. He was the youngest of eight children. His brother, B. R. Chopra, was also an eminent filmmaker. After the Partition, Chopra moved to Ludhiana in East Punjab. He initially studied to become an engineer at Doaba College Jalandhar. His passion for cinema eventually drew him to Bombay. There, he worked alongside his brother and his brother Dharam, who was a cameraman.

In 2006, he became the first Indian to receive lifetime membership from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. These awards reflect his massive contribution to the global film industry.

Several specific films serve as landmarks in his filmography. Deewaar, released in 1975, established Amitabh Bachchan as a leading action star. The 1989 film Chandni was a massive success that ended an era of violent films. It brought music back to the center of Bollywood. Another major work was Lamhe, released in 1991. While it underperformed in India, it brought major profits from overseas markets. Later, his collaboration with Shahrukh Khan produced hits like Darr and Dil To Pagal Hai.
