Khan's professional journey began in the late 1980s through television series. He first appeared in the series Dil Dariya, though production delays occurred. His official television debut was in the 1989 series Fauji. In this show, he played the leading role of Abhimanyu Rai. He also appeared in several other serials like Circus and Idiot. His transition into Hindi cinema involved several distinct phases of character types. He made his film debut in the 1992 musical romance Deewana. This film was a box office hit and won him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. In the early 1990s, Khan took risks by playing villainous or "negative" characters. He played a murderer in Baazigar and an obsessive lover in Darr. These roles challenged the standard Bollywood hero formula. Playing such antagonists was considered a significant risk for a leading man at that time.

Following these intense roles, Khan became a leading figure in romantic cinema. He starred in a long series of top-grossing romantic films. Notable examples include Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He also demonstrated great range by playing more complex characters. He portrayed an alcoholic in the period drama Devdas in 2002. He also played a NASA scientist in Swades and a hockey coach in Chak De! India. In 2010, he played a man with Asperger syndrome in My Name Is Khan.

Khan's personal history is deeply connected to the history of India. He was born on November 2, 1965, in New Delhi. His father, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist. Mir campaigned with the Khudai Khidmatgar, a nonviolent resistance movement. This movement sought a united and independent India. Khan's mother, Lateef Fatima, was a magistrate. His family lived a middle-class life in rented apartments in Delhi. He attended St. Columba's School, where he won the Sword of Honour for excellence in studies and sports.

Beyond acting, Khan is a successful businessman and philanthropist. As of 2015, he serves as co-chairman of Red Chillies Entertainment. He also co-owns two cricket teams in major leagues. These are the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Trinbago Knight Riders. Khan uses his influence to support various charitable causes. He has provided help for healthcare and disaster relief. In 2011, UNESCO gave him the Pyramide con Marni award for supporting children's education. In 2018, he received the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum for advocating for women's and children's rights.

His global impact is reflected in many prestigious lists. In 2008, Newsweek named him one of the fifty most powerful people in the world.
