Khan's professional journey followed a specific path from supporting roles to massive stardom. He first appeared in a supporting capacity in the 1988 film Biwi Ho To Aisi. His career transformed in 1989 with the romantic musical Maine Pyar Kiya. This film served as his breakthrough, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. Following this, he established his presence through various genres. He starred in the romantic drama Saajan in 1991 and the family drama Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! in 1994. The latter became a massive success, earning more than 100 crore rupees worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of its time.

His filmography can be categorized into distinct eras defined by genre and reception. The early 1990s were marked by romantic successes and musicals. However, the 2000s represented a period of decline for him in romantic comedies and tragedies. During this decade, many of his projects failed to find critical or commercial success. He eventually revitalized his screen image in 2009 with the action film Wanted. This shift led to a new era of stardom characterized by high-octane action films. Between 2010 and 2017, he starred in major hits such as Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, and Tiger Zinda Hai.

Khan's personal history is characterized by a diverse cultural and religious background. He was born on 27 December 1965 to screenwriter Salim Khan and Sushila Charak. His father is Muslim and his mother is Hindu, meaning he was raised with exposure to both faiths. There are different accounts regarding his specific ancestry. His father suggests his paternal great-grandparents were Alakozai Pashtuns from Afghanistan who moved to Indore in the mid-1800s. Conversely, biographer Jasim Khan states his ancestors were from the Akuzai sub-tribe of the Yusufzai Pashtuns in the Swat Valley.
