Akshay Kumar

Akshay Kumar is a highly prolific actor and film producer in Hindi cinema.

Born Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia on September 9, 1967, he has appeared in over 150 films throughout a career spanning more than 30 years. He is often called "Khiladi Kumar" by the media. This nickname stems from his early fame as an action star. Kumar has earned significant professional recognition, including two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards. In 2009, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, which is the country's fourth-highest civilian honor.

Before finding success in film, Kumar led a diverse life involving many different occupations. He grew up in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi. His father was an officer in the Indian Army. Later, the family moved to Bombay, Maharashtra, after his father became an accountant for UNICEF. Kumar attended Don Bosco High School in Matunga, where he began learning Karate. He later moved to Bangkok, Thailand, for five years to study Muay Thai, a form of Thai boxing. During this time, he worked as a chef and a waiter. Upon returning to India, he held jobs in a travel agency, a hotel in Dhaka, and selling Kundan jewelry.

Kumar's transition into the film industry was a gradual process of building his professional identity. He initially worked as a martial arts instructor and a background dancer. He made his first screen appearance in 1987 in the film Aaj, playing a Karate instructor. He eventually adopted the stage name Akshay Kumar, inspired by a character named Akshay played by Kumar Gaurav. His big break came in 1992 with the suspense thriller Khiladi. This film was a major commercial success and established his reputation for performing intense action. He followed this with several other successful films in the Khiladi series, such as Sabse Bada Khiladi and Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi.

As his career progressed, Kumar intentionally expanded his range beyond simple action roles. In the early 2000s, he demonstrated his ability to perform in romantic dramas like Dhadkan. He also became well known for his slapstick comedy performances. These included popular films such as Hera Pheri, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. He proved he could handle complex characters by playing a negative role, or a villain, in the film Ajnabee. This performance earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Villain.

Kumar is also recognized for his physical bravery and dangerous stunt work. In the film Khiladi 420, he performed several high-risk sequences. These included climbing a running airplane and standing on top of a plane flying 1,000 feet in the air. He even jumped from a plane onto a hot air balloon. While his commercial success has fluctuated over the decades, he has had periods of massive popularity. For example, in 2007, he achieved four consecutive box-office hits. He also saw critical acclaim for his work in films like Special 26 and the crime thriller Rustom.

His influence extends into business and social causes as well. Kumar is a significant brand endorser in India and has been one of the highest-paid actors globally. From 2015 to 2020, Forbes included him on lists of the highest-paid celebrities and actors. Between 2019 and 2020, he was the only Indian appearing on both of those lists. In 2021, he received the "Sanman Patra" for being a top taxpayer for five consecutive years. He also owns the Khalsa Warriors team in the World Kabaddi League.

Beyond his professional achievements, Kumar is known for his philanthropic efforts. He supports various charities and has used his skills to help others. He established martial arts training schools specifically designed for women's safety in India. He has also hosted television programs, such as the reality show Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi. His career shows a constant movement between different genres, from action and comedy to social films and war dramas. This versatility has allowed him to remain a central figure in Indian cinema for many years.
