Salim Khan is a highly influential Indian screenwriter, actor, and film producer. He is most famous for his work as one half of the legendary writing duo Salim–Javed. Along with his partner, Javed Akhtar, Khan helped transform the landscape of Hindi cinema. They were among the first screenwriters in India to achieve true star status. This was a major shift in how the film industry viewed creative writers. Before them, writers often worked in the shadows without much recognition.

The Salim–Javed partnership functioned through a specific division of creative labor. Salim Khan primarily focused on developing the core stories and the character arcs. Javed Akhtar focused on writing the dialogues and the screenplay structure. They worked closely together to brainstorm and refine their ideas. This collaborative process allowed them to build complex narratives that changed the Bollywood formula. They are credited with popularizing the "masala" film style and the Dacoit Western genre. Their work also created the "angry young man" archetype. This specific character type helped launch the massive career of actor Amitabh Bachchan.

Salim Khan's early life was marked by both privilege and significant personal loss. He was born on November 24, 1935, in Indore, British India. His family had Pashtun roots, with ancestors who served in the British Indian Army cavalry. His father, Abdul Rashid Khan, held the high rank of DIG-Indore in the police. However, Khan lost his mother to tuberculosis when he was only nine years old. His father passed away in January 1950, when Salim was fourteen. Despite these hardships, he completed his BA at Holkar College. He was also a trained pilot and an excellent cricket player.

Khan's professional career actually began in front of the camera rather than behind a desk. During the 1960s, he worked as a supporting actor in several films. He used the name Prince Salim during this period of his life. He appeared in about 14 films, including the movie Teesri Manzil. However, he eventually realized that he lacked the specific art of projection needed for acting. By the late 1960s, he began transitioning into scriptwriting. He started as a writing assistant to Abrar Alvi to learn the craft. This shift proved to be the most important decision of his career.

The partnership with Javed Akhtar began during the production of Sarhadi Lootera. The two men became friends because their mentors were neighbors. They eventually formed the Salim–Javed team and achieved massive commercial success. Their first major break came when actor Rajesh Khanna asked them to fix a script. This led to the hit film Haathi Mere Saathi. The duo went on to write 24 films together. Out of these 24 films, 20 were considered major hits. Their most famous work, Sholay, became the highest-grossing Indian film of its era.

Salim–Javed's impact went far beyond just making successful movies. They changed the professional status of screenwriters in the Hindi film industry. Before their rise, writers were often paid small amounts and left out of the credits. Salim and Javed insisted on being paid much higher salaries. They also demanded that their names appear prominently in the film credits. This gave writers more power and respect within the studio system. They proved that the person writing the story was just as important as the actors on screen.

After the duo split in 1982 due to ego issues, Salim Khan continued his career as an individual writer. He wrote successful scripts for films like Angaaray and Naam. He also wrote the film Patthar Ke Phool, which featured his son, Salman Khan. His family remains deeply connected to the Indian film industry. His three sons, Salman, Arbaaz, and Sohail Khan, are all established Bollywood actors. His daughter, Alvira Khan Agnihotri, is a film producer. Khan's legacy is preserved in the 2024 documentary series titled Angry Young Men. This series explores his creative journey and his massive influence on global cinema.
