In 2009, Hirani directed the coming-of-age comedy-drama 3 Idiots. This film was loosely adapted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. It was the highest-grossing Indian film of its time. Hirani won several awards for this project, including Best Director and Best Film at the Filmfare Awards. This success solidified his position as a prominent figure in Hindi cinema.

His personal journey heavily influenced his dedication to the craft. Born on November 20, 1962, in Nagpur, Hirani comes from a Sindhi Hindu family. During his studies, he spent months watching the films of Satyajit Ray to learn storytelling.

Today, Hirani is expanding his reach into new media formats. In 2023, he released the comedy-drama Dunki, starring Shah Rukh Khan. He is also moving into the digital space as a showrunner. His first long-form digital series, titled Trojan, is being produced for Disney+ Hotstar. This crime drama and comedy features actors Vikrant Massey and Arshad Warsi.
