Roshan's career began with acting before he transitioned into directing. In the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in 84 different films. During this early period, he was primarily known for playing supporting roles in big-budget productions. He also acted in several women-oriented films, such as Khubsoorat and Paraya Dhan. While he had some success as a solo lead hero in films like Shubh Kaamna, many of his solo ventures were box office flops. He eventually moved toward directing, which became his most successful professional path.

As a director, Roshan became famous for a specific pattern in his film titles. Since 1987, many of his most successful films have begun with the letter "K." His directorial debut was the action drama Khudgarz in 1987, which was a major commercial success. He followed this with the revenge drama thriller Khoon Bhari Maang in 1988. This film was considered path-breaking because it featured a female protagonist as the central character. It earned Rekha a Filmfare Award for Best Actress and brought Roshan his first nominations for Best Director and Best Film.

Roshan's directing career includes several distinct styles and genres. He directed action comedies like Kishen Kanhaiya in 1990 and King Uncle in 1993. The latter film was notable for featuring a young Shah Rukh Khan in a supporting role. He also made melodramatic thrillers, such as the 1995 blockbuster Karan Arjun. This film was the second-highest-grossing Indian film of its year. He later moved into science fiction with the Koi... Mil Gaya series. This work introduced new concepts to Hindi cinema and helped create a superhero genre.

In 2000, Roshan launched the career of his son, Hrithik Roshan. They collaborated on the musical romantic thriller Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. This film was a massive success and entered the Limca Book of Records for the most awards won by a Bollywood film. It also won Roshan Filmfare Awards for both Best Film and Best Director. They continued this partnership with the science fiction films Koi... Mil Gaya and the Krrish franchise. The Krrish series, which includes Krrish (2006) and Krrish 3 (2013), helped establish the first superhero in Hindi cinema. These films were major commercial successes and frequently ranked among the highest-grossing films of the year.

Roshan's life has included significant personal and professional challenges. In January 2000, he was the target of a shooting attempt near his office in Mumbai. The attack was not intended to kill him but was meant to signal a message regarding film profits. Later, in 2019, he was diagnosed with early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. Despite these difficulties, he has continued his work in the industry. He has received honors such as the Global Indian Film Awards for his 35 years of contribution to Indian cinema.
