He was a prolific actor, writer, and producer. He is most famous for pioneering method acting in Hindi cinema. Method acting is a technique where actors use deep emotional realism. Kumar used a signature style of understated acting. He often mumbled his dialogues to create specific meanings. He used many facial expressions to convey complex human feelings. This approach helped define the golden era of Hindi film.

Kumar was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on 11 December 1922. He grew up in Peshawar in the North-West Frontier Province. His father, Lala Ghulam Sarwar Ali Khan, was a fruit merchant. Khan studied at the Barnes School in Deolali. In 1940, he moved to Pune to run a canteen. He debuted in the film Jwar Bhata in 1944. This first film did not find success. He adopted the stage name Dilip Kumar later. Devika Rani, a producer, suggested this professional name. He used it partly to avoid his father's disapproval of acting.

His early career saw a mix of failures and massive hits. After two unsuccessful films, Jugnu became his first major hit in 1947. This film starred him alongside singer Noor Jehan. He followed this with hits like Shaheed and Mela in 1948. In 1949, he had a major breakthrough in the film Andaz. This film was the highest-grossing Indian film until later that year. During the 1950s, he became a massive superstar. He appeared in many top-grossing films like Jogan and Madhumati. Nine of his 21 films from that decade were top 30 hits.

Kumar's acting roles often shaped his public reputation. He was frequently called the "Tragedy King." This was because he excelled at playing very sad characters. These roles sometimes led to real depression for the actor. On the advice of a psychiatrist, he began taking lighter roles. His 1952 film Aan was a big musical adventure. It was his first film shot in technicolor. Aan was also the first Indian film to have a wide release in Europe. It held the record for the highest-grossing Indian film at the time.

In 1960, he played Prince Salim in the epic Mughal-e-Azam. This historical film was a massive production. It took over ten years to make the movie. It was originally shot in black and white. Only two songs and the climax were in color. The film remained the highest-grossing Indian film for 15 years. In 1961, he worked behind the scenes on Ganga Jamuna. He produced this film under his company, Citizen Films. He also acted in the lead role alongside his brother. Some say he even acted as a ghost director for it.

His career faced a difficult period during the 1970s. New actors like Amitabh Bachchan became very popular. Kumar saw a decline in film offers and box office success. He took a five-year hiatus from acting between 1976 and 1981. He made a successful comeback with the film Kranti in 1981. This film was the highest-grossing Indian movie of that year. He then reinvented himself as an "Angry Old Man." He played powerful characters in films like Vidhaata and Karma. His final appearance was in the film Qila in 1998.

The Indian government honored his immense talent. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. This is India's second-highest civilian award. He also won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. The government of Pakistan also recognized him. They gave him the Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1998. He was the only Indian to receive this honor. His childhood home in Peshawar is now a national heritage monument. Kumar lived in Mumbai until he died in 2021.
