He was a master of the "social epic." This is a type of grand film that explores large themes in society. His stories often focused on rural life and the struggles of the poor. He also explored themes like class warfare and the oppression of lower social classes. Khan was famous for creating "blockbusters," which are films that achieve massive popularity and commercial success. His work helped shape the landscape of Indian cinema for many decades.

Khan's career began with a very humble start in a stable. He was born in Bilimora in 1907. He moved to Bombay to work as a horseshoe repairer for Noor Muhammad Ali Muhammed Shipra Baddhiyawala. His path changed when he met director Chandrashekhar at a film shoot. Chandrashekhar noticed Khan's deep interest in the filmmaking process. He convinced the stable owner to let Khan work small jobs in Bombay studios. Khan worked his way up from being an extra to an assistant director. He eventually directed his first film, Al Hilal, in 1935.

As his skills grew, Khan began to establish his own professional infrastructure. In 1945, he founded his own production house called Mehboob Productions. He later expanded his influence by building Mehboob Studios in Bandra, Mumbai, in 1954.

This studio became a central place for his creative work. Throughout his career, he directed various types of films. He made romantic dramas like Andaz in 1949 and swashbuckling musicals like Aan in 1951. He is also credited with creating the "dacoit film" genre. This genre focuses on stories involving outlaws or bandits.

Khan's films were known for their specific linguistic and visual qualities. His earlier films were primarily in Urdu. Later, he transitioned to using Hindustani. Hindustani is a softer, more conversational version of Hindi and Urdu. He often collaborated with writer Aghajani Kashmeri to craft his scripts. Kashmeri even helped train the actress Nargis in Hindustani and Urdu dialogue delivery. Visually, Khan was heavily influenced by Hollywood. He often utilized lavish, expensive sets to create a grand sense of scale for his audiences.

His most significant achievement was the 1957 social epic, Mother India. This film was a remake of his own 1940 film, Aurat. The movie achieved incredible international and domestic recognition. It won two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards, including Best Film and Best Director. Most notably, it received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958. This was a massive milestone for Indian cinema on the global stage. The film remains one of the most important examples of his ability to tell sweeping human stories.

Beyond his own directing, Khan acted as a vital talent scout for the industry. He helped launch the careers of many actors who became legendary stars. These included names like Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, and Nargis. He also introduced the actor Sunil Dutt through his film Taqdeer. His influence reached the highest levels of industry leadership. He served as the president of the Film Federation of India from 1963 until 1964. In 1961, he also served as a jury member for the 2nd Moscow International Film Festival.

The Indian government recognized his massive contributions to the arts. He was awarded the Padma Shri, which is the fourth highest civilian honor in India. He also received the title Hidayat Kar-e-Azam. To honor his legacy, the Indian postal department released a commemorative stamp in 2007. This stamp celebrated his birth centenary, marking 100 years since his birth. Although he died of a heart attack in 1964 at age 56, his impact on film continues to be studied today.
