He was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on 11 December 1922, in Peshawar. He became a massive star in Hindi films during the 1950s and 1960s. People often called him the "Tragedy King" because he played many sad roles. He was famous for a special way of acting called method acting. This meant he used soft speech and many facial expressions to show deep feelings. His acting style helped change how people performed on screen.

His journey in movies began with a few difficult steps. He made his debut in the film Jwar Bhata in 1944. This first movie did not find much success at the box office. After two more unsuccessful films, he finally had a big hit with Jugnu in 1947. This film starred him alongside the singer Noor Jehan. Following this, he starred in many top-grossing films like Shaheed and Andaz. He worked in 57 films over a career that lasted more than fifty years.

Kumar's life changed many times as he moved through different eras of film. In the 1950s, he was part of the golden era of Hindi cinema. He starred in the huge historical epic Mughal-e-Azam, which was released in 1960. This movie was the highest-grossing Indian film for 15 years. Later, his career faced a hard time during the 1970s. He even took a five-year break from acting between 1976 and 1981. He returned with a huge success in the film Kranti in 1981.

He was a man of many talents and roles. He was a writer and a producer for some films. He even worked as a ghost director, which means he helped direct without getting the official credit. In 1961, he produced and starred in the drama Ganga Jamuna. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, which is the upper house of India's parliament, from 2000 to 2006. His personal life was often in the news, but he stayed away from the limelight. He married the actress Saira Banu in 1966.

The world gave him many honors for his amazing work. The Indian government gave him the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. He also won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. In 1998, the government of Pakistan gave him the Nishan-e-Imtiaz. This made him the only Indian to receive that high honor. Even the house where he grew up in Peshawar is now a national heritage monument. He lived in Mumbai until he passed away in 2021.
