She is primarily recognized for her extensive work in Hindi cinema. Zinta is celebrated for portraying diverse and often culturally defiant characters. Her screen persona often features independent and modern Indian women. This variety helped her establish herself as a leading actress during the 2000s. Beyond acting, she is a social activist and a business owner.

Her career spans film, television, and international sports ownership.

Zinta's path to stardom involved several distinct professional stages. She first entered the public eye through television commercials. In 1996, a chance meeting at a birthday party led to a Perk chocolate advertisement. This was followed by appearances in various catalogues and commercials, such as for Liril soap. Her transition to acting began in 1998 after meeting director Shekhar Kapur. Kapur insisted she audition, which eventually led to her film debut. She moved from modeling into professional acting through a series of auditions and film roles.

Her early film career was defined by rapid success and critical recognition. In 1998, she made her debut in the romantic thriller Dil Se.. as Preeti Nair. Although her screen time was only twenty minutes, her performance was highly noticed. She also starred in the action-drama Soldier that same year. These two performances earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She later expanded her range by appearing in Telugu films like Premante Idera. She also took on more intense roles, such as a CBI officer in the thriller Sangharsh.

Zinta's background significantly influenced her personal development and discipline. She was born on January 31, 1975, into a Hindu Rajput family in Shimla. Her father, Durganand Zinta, served as an officer in the Indian Army. A tragic car accident occurred when she was thirteen years old. This accident resulted in her father's death and left her mother, Nilprabha, bedridden for two years. Zinta has described this as a turning point that forced her to mature quickly. Her father's military background instilled a lasting sense of discipline and punctuality in her.

As her career progressed, Zinta achieved significant commercial and critical milestones. In 2000, the film Kya Kehna became a major box-office success. Her role as a teenage single mother earned her several award nominations. She later won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Kal Ho Naa Ho in 2003.
