Her journey into movies was quite unexpected. Suhasini first studied at the Madras Film Institute. She wanted to learn about cinematography, which is the art of using cameras. This led to her acting debut in the 1980 Tamil movie Nenjathai Killathe. She won a state award for that very first role.

Suhasini does much more than just act in front of cameras. She is also a director who tells stories from behind the camera. In 1991, she directed a mini-series called Penn for Madras Doordarshan. This series looked at the lives of South Indian women. She also directed her first full film called Indira in 1995. Later, she directed a segment called "Coffee, Anyone?" for an Amazon Prime project. She even works with her husband, Mani Ratnam, at their company Madras Talkies.

Her career includes many famous names and important dates. She won the National Film Award in 1985 for the film Sindhu Bhairavi. She has worked with many famous actors like Mammootty and Mohanlal. In 1983, she appeared in the Malayalam film Koodevide. She has also acted in many Kannada films like Suprabhatha in 1988. Her filmography is very large and spans many decades. She continues to take on new roles in films through 2026.

Beyond the world of movies, Suhasini works to help others. In 2010, she started the Naam Foundation. This organization helps single women from difficult backgrounds. The foundation provides many kinds of support. They offer medical aid and help with education. They also provide legal aid and self-defense training. Suhasini wants to help these women find independence and self-worth. She uses her success to make a positive difference in the world.
