She was born in the city of Varanasi to a family named Tambe. Some people say she was born in 1827, while others say 1835. As a young girl, she was known as Manu. Her life changed when she married the king of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao. They became the leaders of the princely state of Jhansi. The couple had one son, but he died when he was very small. Before he died, the king adopted a young relative named Damodar Rao. This was meant to make Damodar the next ruler. However, the British East India Company did not accept this change. They used a rule called the Doctrine of Lapse to take control of Jhansi.

The Rani did not want to give up her home. She wrote many letters to the British leaders to protest. She argued that the new rules broke old treaties. She even hired a lawyer to help her fight the decision. Despite her hard work, the British took over Jhansi in May 1854. The Rani was given a monthly pension of five thousand rupees. She lived in her palace but was no longer the ruler. She famously said she would never give up her Jhansi.

In May 1857, a large rebellion broke out across northern India. This started when Indian troops in Meerut mutinied against their British officers. The conflict spread quickly to many other towns and cities. The Rani became a major leader during this time. She gathered an army to defend her territory.
