She was known for being a very good leader. People called her a Sadhvi, which means a holy woman. She worked hard to help her people through many years. Her work changed the way many cities looked and functioned. She is still remembered as a great leader today.

Ahilyabai learned how to rule through many different lessons. Her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar, was a very important leader. He taught her about politics and how to manage money. He even showed her how to handle military matters. In 1765, he sent her on a mission with heavy artillery. She had to move weapons to the fort at Gohad. This showed that he trusted her to lead soldiers.

Her life changed many times due to loss and duty. She was born in the village of Chandi in Maharashtra. She married Khanderao Holkar in 1733 when she was very young. Sadly, her husband died during a siege at Kumher in 1754. Later, her only son, Male Rao, died in 1767. After these losses, Ahilyabai became the real ruler of the dynasty. She had to defend Indore from many different attacks. She even led her own armies into battle to win.

Ahilyabai used her own wealth to help the whole country. She had personal funds of about sixteen crore rupees. She did not use public money for her own family needs. Instead, she built many temples, ghats, and rest houses. She helped fix the Kashi Viswanath Mandir in Varanasi. She also built the Dashashwamedh Ghat at Banaras. Her charity reached many places like Dwarka, Mathura, and Ayodhya. She even sent Ganga water to Kanchipuram every year.

Today, many things in India honor her great work. The Indore airport is named the Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport. A large university in Indore also carries her name. In 2024, the state of Maharashtra renamed a district to Ahilyanagar. A special stamp was made to celebrate her life in 1996. People still look at her buildings to see her style. She remains a famous example of a kind and strong ruler.
