Many things changed the state over the years. First, the capital moved from Kampel to Indore in 1720. This happened because trade was growing in the city. Later, a queen named Ahilyabai Holkar moved the capital to Maheshwar in 1767. However, Indore stayed a very important center for business. Eventually, the capital moved back to Indore on November 3, 1818.

The Holkar dynasty began with a man named Malhar Rao Holkar. He was a commander for the Peshwa, who was a leader. On July 29, 1732, the Peshwa gave Malhar Rao his own state. This state included 28 and a half parganas, which are areas of land.

After a war in 1818, the state became a British protectorate. This meant Great Britain provided protection to the kingdom. The rulers were called Maharajas and held a special 19-gun salute.

Indore grew quickly during the time of its many rulers. In 1875, the state introduced railways to help businesses. This made trade much easier for everyone. In 1906, the city installed electrical infrastructure. A fire brigade was also started in 1909 to keep people safe. In 1918, an architect named Patrick Geddes drew a master plan for the city.

The last ruler was Maharaja Yashwant Rao Holkar II. He signed the papers to join the Indian Union on January 1, 1950. The lands of the state then became part of Madhya Bharat.
