Indore State

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Indore State was a significant kingdom within the Maratha Empire. It was ruled by the Holkar dynasty for many generations. This state was located in the region known today as Madhya Pradesh. Its primary capital was the city of Indore. The state was a major commercial and military center in Central India.

The history of the Holkar dynasty began with Malhar Rao Holkar. He was a commander under the Maratha Peshwa, Baji Rao I. On July 29, 1732, the Peshwa granted Holkar State to Malhar Rao. This grant included 28 and a half parganas, which are administrative land divisions. By 1720, the local headquarters had already moved from Kampel to Indore. This change happened because commercial activity was increasing in the city.

Different leaders changed how the state was managed over time. In 1767, the ruler's daughter-in-law, Ahilyabai Holkar, moved the capital to Maheshwar. Despite this move, Indore remained a vital hub for trade and military operations. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War, the state's status changed significantly. On January 6, 1818, an agreement was signed with the British. Indore became a British protectorate, meaning it was under British protection.

Following the 1818 agreement, the capital moved back to Indore on November 3, 1818. The British established the Indore Residency to manage political relations. This location eventually became the headquarters for the British Central India Agency. The rulers, known as Maharajas, held a high status. They were entitled to a 19-gun salute from British authorities. The royal court, or Darbar, included many officials like Jagirdars and Zamindars.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the state saw modern developments. In 1875, railways were introduced to the state. This helped business flourish under rulers like Shivaji Rao Holkar and Tukoji Rao Holkar III. In 1906, electrical infrastructure was installed in the city. A fire brigade was established in 1909 to improve safety. By 1918, architect Patrick Geddes drew the first master plan for the city.

Specific rulers left their own marks on the state's growth. Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar II focused on industrial and planned development. In 1900, Maharaja Tukoji Rao III Holkar XIII founded the Order of Ahilya Holkar Sultanat. This was a royal order of chivalry with three distinct classes. However, leadership changed in 1926 when Maharaja Tukoji Rao III abdicated. This happened after he was implicated in a legal case involving a court dancer.

The final years of the state were marked by the independence of India. After 1947, Indore State joined the Indian Union with other neighboring states. The last ruler was Maharaja Yashwant Rao Holkar II. He signed the instrument of accession on January 1, 1950. Following this, the territories of the state became part of Madhya Bharat. This transition marked the end of the princely state era.
