They belonged to a group of people called the Rajputs. In the beginning, these leaders were not independent. They worked as vassals for the Rashtrakuta kings. A vassal is a person who serves a more powerful leader. This changed around the year 972. A ruler named Siyaka attacked the capital of Manyakheta. This event helped the Paramaras become their own sovereign power.

As the dynasty grew, they established a strong home base. The region of Malwa became their main territory. This area is in what we now call Madhya Pradesh. A king named Munja made the city of Dhara their capital. Later, a very famous king named Bhoja led the empire. Under his rule, the kingdom reached its highest point. The empire stretched from Chittor in the north to Konkan in the south. It also went from the Sabarmati River in the west to Vidisha in the east.

The Paramaras had many stories about where they came from. One famous story is called the Agnikula myth. It says their ancestors were born from a sacred fire. According to this legend, a hero was created from a fire pit. This hero defeated enemies and was given the name Paramara.

Some historians have different ideas about their past. Some believe they were descendants of the Rashtrakuta kings. Others think they might have been from a group of scholars called Brahmins. There is also a theory that they came from the Deccan region.

Life in Malwa was very bright under these rulers. The Paramaras loved learning and the arts. They gave support to many Sanskrit poets and scholars. King Bhoja was a very famous scholar himself. Most of the kings followed the faith of Shiva. They built many beautiful stone temples for him.

They also helped Jain scholars with their work. This support helped create a great culture in the region. The temples they built still stand as amazing pieces of history today.

However, staying in power was a hard job. The Paramaras fought many wars with their neighbors. They struggled against the Chaulukyas and the Chandelas. These battles caused their power to rise and fall many times. Because of these fights, they had to move their capital. They eventually moved from Dhara to a place called Mandapa-Durga. The last known king was Mahalakadeva. He was defeated by the forces of Alauddin Khalji in 1305. Even after his defeat, some records show they ruled for a few more years.
