They are also called the Gurjara-Pratiharas or the Pratiharas of Kannauj. This group was very important because they protected the land. They helped stop Arab armies from moving east of the Indus River. The name Pratihara might mean "door-keeper." This comes from a legend about a hero named Lakshmana. He served as a door-keeper for his brother, Rama.

Many leaders helped the dynasty grow over many years.

Nagabhata I was an early and strong leader. He defeated an Arab army led by Junaid and Tamin. Later, Nagabhata II helped the dynasty become very powerful. He won control of the important city of Kannauj. This victory started a long fight called the Tripartite Struggle. The Pratiharas fought the Pala and Rashtrakuta empires for control. This struggle lasted for a long time in northern India.

The dynasty reached its highest point of power under two kings.

Mihira Bhoja and Mahendrapala I were both very successful rulers. Under Mahendrapala I, the empire was huge. It stretched from the border of Sindh in the west to Bengal in the east. It went from the Himalayas in the north to the Narmada River in the south. The kings even took the grand title of Maharajadhiraja of Aryavarta. This title means "Great King of Kings of Aryan Lands."

The Pratiharas were also famous for their beautiful art and buildings.

They created lovely sculptures and carved stone panels. They were known for building temples with an open pavilion style. Their temple building style reached a peak at Khajuraho. This site is now a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. They also made beautiful bronze statues, like those of Vishnu and Lakshmi. These artworks show how skilled their craftsmen were.

Eventually, the great power of the dynasty began to fade.

Fighting within the royal family made them much weaker. In about 916, a Rashtrakuta ruler named Indra III attacked Kannauj. This raid hurt the dynasty very deeply. Their smaller followers began to leave and rule their own lands. By the end of the tenth century, they ruled very little territory. The last important king was Rajyapala, who was driven from Kannauj in 1018.
