They ruled much of northern India a long time ago. Their name might mean "door-keeper." This comes from a legend about a hero named Lakshmana.

Early leaders like Nagabhata I were very strong. He led armies to stop invaders from the west. Later, Nagabhata II helped the group grow even more. He won control of a city called Kannauj. This led to a long fight with two other groups. These groups were the Palas and the Rashtrakutas.

The dynasty reached its peak under Mihira Bhoja. His land stretched from the west to the east.

He was a great leader and a smart diplomat. The Pratiharas also made beautiful art. They built stone temples with lovely carvings.

They also made metal statues of gods.

Over time, the group became less powerful. Fighting within the family made them weak. A ruler named Indra III attacked their city. By the end of the tenth century, they ruled very little land.
