Long ago, three powerful groups fought for a city. That city was Kannauj. It was in northern India. Being the ruler of Kannauj was a big deal. It was like being the king of all northern India.

The three groups were the Gurjara-Pratiharas from the west. They were the Palas from the east in Bengal. The third group was the Rashtrakutas from the south.

These wars lasted for many years. In the first war, a leader named Vatsaraja took part. He was a Pratihara king. He defeated the king of Kannauj. But then, a southern king named Dhruva came to fight. Dhruva defeated Vatsaraja and forced him to hide.

Later, the Pala king Dharmapala took the city. He put his brother on the throne. But the fighting did not stop. The Rashtrakuta king Govinda III also fought to show his power.

Finally, Nagabhata II of the Pratihara group won. In the year 816, he became the King of Kannauj. He won a big fight at Monghyr. This ended the long struggle for the city.
