Pala Empire

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Long ago, the Pala Empire ruled parts of India.

The empire began in the late eighth century. A leader named Gopala was chosen by local chiefs. This helped bring peace to the land.

Gopala's son, Dharmapala, and his grandson, Devapala, grew the empire. They made it very large and powerful. The Palas had a huge army of war elephants. They also used ships on the sea.

This was a golden time for art and learning. The kings built grand Buddhist temples and monasteries. They also supported great schools like Nalanda.

They even shared their culture with places like Tibet.

Over time, the empire faced many hard challenges. They fought with other powerful groups for control. Later, the empire became much weaker. In the 12th century, a new group called the Senas took power. This marked the end of the Pala rule in Bengal.
