Long ago in northern India, a great struggle took place. It was a series of wars known as the Tripartite Struggle. These wars lasted from the year 785 to 816. The main goal was to control the city of Kannauj. Controlling Kannauj was very important for any leader. It was like having imperial status over all of Aryavarta. This meant the ruler held power over much of northern India.

Three large groups of people fought for this power. The first were the Gurjara-Pratiharas from the west. The second were the Palas from the east in Bengal. The third were the Rashtrakutas from the south in the Deccan. These three dynasties all wanted to expand their lands. They fought for decades to see who would rule the center. This long conflict is often called the Kannauj triangle.

The fighting started because of many old rivalries. The Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas had shared borders for a long time. They often argued over lands like Gujarat and Malwa. Even before the big wars, a Rashtrakuta founder named Dantidurga fought a Pratihara king. At the same time, the Palas and the rulers of Kannauj had an old struggle. This old fight had started way back in the 7th century. These many different battles made it a very complex struggle.

Many different kings led these armies through the years. First, a Pratihara king named Vatsaraja invaded Kannauj. He defeated the king there named Indrayudha. However, a southern king named Dhruva soon arrived to fight. Dhruva defeated Vatsaraja and forced him to hide in the desert. Later, the Pala king Dharmapala took control of the city. He even held a grand court to crown his brother, Chakrayudha.

Eventually, the fighting reached a final end. After the death of the king Govinda III, the threat from the south faded. A Pratihara leader named Nagabhata II saw his chance. In the year 816, he invaded the region known as the Doab. He fought a big battle at a place called Monghyr. Nagabhata II defeated the forces of the Pala king. He then proclaimed himself the King of Kannauj.
