They ruled for a very long time, from about 350 to 999 CE. People call them "Western" Gangas to tell them apart from another group called the Eastern Gangas. The Western Gangas likely started their rule when the Pallava empire grew weak. This allowed local clans to claim their own freedom. They controlled a large area known as Gangavadi. This land included many modern places like Bangalore, Kolar, and Mysore.

Running a kingdom involves many steps and big changes. At first, the kings ruled from a place called Kolar. Later, they moved their capital to Talakadu near the Kaveri River. They did this to better manage their growing land. The kingdom was divided into smaller parts called districts. These were called "Rashtra" or "Nadu" in the Kannada language. These districts were further split into smaller areas called "Visaya." Some people think these names even showed how much money or how many soldiers lived there.

History shows that the Ganga kings often worked with other strong lands. For a long time, they were allies of the Chalukyas of Badami. They even fought battles together against the Pallavas. Later, a new power called the Rashtrakutas took over the region. The Gangas fought for their independence for about one hundred years. Eventually, they became close allies with the Rashtrakutas through marriage. A Ganga prince named Butuga I married a Rashtrakuta princess named Chandrabbalabbe. This helped bring peace and strong teamwork between the two groups.

The Western Gangas left a beautiful mark on the world. They were kind to people of all faiths. They especially supported Jainism, which led to many stone monuments. You can still see amazing temples like the Panchakuta Basadi at Kambadahalli.

They also helped literature flourish in the Kannada and Sanskrit languages. One famous book, the Chavundaraya Purana, was written in 978 CE. The dynasty finally ended around the year 1000. This happened when the Chola Dynasty conquered their lands.
