Their history happened in three main stages over a long time. The first stage was the Early Eastern Gangas from 493 to 1077. The second stage was the Imperial Eastern Gangas from 1077 to 1436. The final stage was the Khemundi Gangas from 1436 to 1947.

During the early years, the court used the Telugu language. Later, the Odia language became official as the empire grew north. The kings moved their capital cities several times. They moved from Dantapura to Kalinganagara and then to Kataka. Eventually, the capital moved to Paralakhemundi.

Historians believe the dynasty began when people moved from the west. Many experts think they were a branch of the Western Gangas. A leader named Kamarnava I is a very important figure. He left his home in the Gangawadi province of Karnataka. He traveled east with his four brothers to find a new home.

They reached the Mahendra mountain and settled in Kalinga. Kamarnava I defeated a local king to gain control of the land. This helped the dynasty start its long rule in the east.

The Gangas were very successful at trade and commerce. They used the wealth from this trade to build amazing things. They are most famous for building huge stone temples.
