This land was a very strong power in the region. It had many vassal states in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. These included places like parts of Odisha, Bihar, and Assam. The kingdom was a Sunni Muslim monarchy. It was home to many different groups of people. These included Bengali, Turco-Persian, Afghan, and Abyssinian elites.

Merchants and ships traveled to many far-off places. They connected Bengal to Asia, Africa, and even Europe. Bengali ships traded in China, Malacca, and the Maldives. Because there were so many goods, people called it the richest country to trade with. Visitors from China and Europe described it as a thriving nation.

Many different families, or dynasties, ruled the land over time. The Ilyas Shahi family was one of the most important.

Shamsuddin Ilyas Shah unified the delta and became a great leader. He founded a dynasty that ruled for fifteen decades. Later, the Hussain Shahi dynasty took control in 1494. Alauddin Hussain Shah was a very important ruler from this group. Some say he was the first native Bengali ruler of the capital, Gaur.

Life in the Sultanate was full of busy cities and grand buildings. Some cities were called Mint Towns because they made the historical taka money.

In the year 1500, the capital city of Gaur was the fifth-most populous city in the world. Other big cities included Pandua, Sonargaon, and the seaport of Chittagong. The rulers built many beautiful things like mosques and palaces. The Adina Mosque in Pandua was the largest mosque in the area.

Many buildings showed a special Bengali style mixed with foreign ideas.

The kingdom was also a place where different cultures lived together. It was known for religious pluralism, which means people of different faiths lived in peace. While Persian was the main language for business and diplomacy, the Sultans helped the Bengali language grow. It became an official language at the royal court. Eventually, the Sultanate began to decline. The Sur Empire took control for a short time. After that, the Mughal Empire conquered the land. This caused the large kingdom to break into smaller, local kingdoms.
