Sena dynasty

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Sena dynasty was a group of Hindu kings who ruled a large part of the Indian subcontinent. They ruled the Bengal region during the 11th and 12th centuries. This empire was very strong at its peak. It covered much of the north-eastern part of the land. The Senas took over after the Pala dynasty ruled there. They were a mighty group that changed how people lived.

The history of these kings began with a man named Samanta Sena. He was a migrant from a place called Karnataka in south India. After him, Hemanta Sena took power and called himself king in 1095 AD. Then came Vijaya Sena, who ruled for over 60 years. He helped build a strong foundation for the empire. Later, Ballala Sena became a great ruler. He conquered Gaur and made the city of Nadia his capital.

These kings were very important for art and building. Ballala Sena built the Dhakeshwari Temple in the 12th century. This temple is in what is now Dhaka, Bangladesh. The dynasty also built many Hindu temples and monasteries. They loved literature and supported many great poets. Some of these poets, like Jayadeva, worked at the court of Lakshmana Sena.

Daily life under the Senas involved many different ways to pay for things. They used silver coins with names like Purana or Dramma. A silver Purana coin weighed about 56.6 grains. Because precious coins were hard to find, people also used small shells called cowries. A table of math showed that 1260 cowries were worth one silver coin. This helped people trade in markets every day.

The empire began to fade after the rule of Lakshmana Sena. He was the last very important king of the dynasty. His sons, Vishvarupa Sena and Keshava Sena, ruled after him. The dynasty likely lost its power around 1230 AD. Some records say their descendants ruled in Bengal until at least 1245 AD. Even after they were gone, their name lived on in new groups of people.
