This empire changed how people lived and talked. It brought new ideas and art to the region. It connected India to big trade networks in the Islamic world. This period helped create the Hindustani language. It also led to a new style of building called Indo-Islamic architecture.

The empire grew through many different stages. It was ruled by five different families or dynasties. These were the Mamluk, Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid, and Lodi dynasties.

The Mamluk period began in 1206. The Khalji period followed from 1290 to 1320. The Tughlaq dynasty ruled from 1320 to 1414. Then came the Sayyid dynasty from 1414 to 1451. Finally, the Lodi dynasty ruled until 1526. Each family brought its own way of ruling the land.

History shows how the Sultanate began. It started with the conqueror Muhammad Ghori. He fought a battle near Tarain in 1192. After he died in 1206, his generals took over. These generals were often called Mamluks. Mamluks were soldiers who had once been slaves.

Many important people and events shaped this time. Razia Sultana was a famous female ruler. She reigned from 1236 to 1240. The empire also faced hard times. A king named Timur raided Delhi in 1398. This raid caused big changes in North India.
