Shams ud-Din Iltutmish was a very important leader in history. He was the third Sultan of Delhi from 1211 to 1236. Many people call him the true founder of the Delhi Sultanate. This was a strong land in northern India. He was the first Muslim ruler to govern from the city of Delhi. His name actually means "maintainer of the kingdom" in the Turkic language. He worked hard to make his empire stable and strong.

Iltutmish had a very difficult start in life. He was born into a wealthy family. However, his brothers were jealous of him. They sold him to a slave dealer when he was a young boy. He was moved to many different places like Bukhara and Ghazni. Eventually, a leader named Qutb ud-Din Aibak bought him in Delhi. Iltutmish rose quickly through the ranks of Aibak's service. He became the head of a bodyguard unit. He also managed important lands called iqtas.

Becoming a Sultan required many tough choices and battles. After Aibak died in 1210, a man named Aram Shah took over. But many nobles did not like Aram Shah. They invited Iltutmish to take the throne instead. Iltutmish marched to Delhi and took power in 1211. He had to fight many rivals to keep his land. He fought leaders like Taj al-Din Yildiz and Nasir ad-Din Qabacha. He also brought independent areas like Ranthambore and Mandore back under his rule. He even won control over the Indus Valley in 1228.

Iltutmish was also a great organizer for his people. He created the Iqtadari system to help run the empire. In this system, he gave land to officers instead of paying them with money. He also made new kinds of money for everyone to use. He introduced the silver tanka and the copper jital. These coins had a standard weight of 175 grains. These coins helped trade work much better across his lands.

Beyond rules and money, he built many beautiful things. He built mosques for prayer and khanqahs for monks. He also built dargahs, which are special shrines. He even made a large water reservoir for pilgrims to use. These buildings helped the community grow and stay connected. His work helped the Delhi Sultanate stay strong for a long time. His leadership changed how northern India was governed for many years. He turned a difficult life into a legacy of great building and order.
