Muhammad bin Tughluq was a powerful ruler in India. He was the eighteenth Sultan of Delhi. He ruled from February 1325 until his death in March 1351.

He was the eldest son of Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq. His father started the Tughlaq dynasty. Before he became Sultan, Muhammad was a young prince. In 1321, his father sent him on a military campaign. By 1323, he had successfully led a siege against Warangal. This victory ended the Kakatiya dynasty. He was a very learned man who studied medicine. He also spoke many languages like Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit.

Muhammad had many big ideas for his empire. In 1327, he ordered the capital to move. He moved it from Delhi to Daulatabad in the Deccan region. He chose this central place to help manage his lands. He wanted to protect his people from Mongol and Afghan invasions.

To help the move, he built a broad road. He planted shady trees along the sides of this road. He even set up stations every two miles for rest. These stations had food, water, and religious leaders called Sufi saints. He also started a regular postal service between the two cities.

Even with these plans, many hard things happened. The move to Daulatabad was very difficult for many people. Many died on the road because there was not enough food. In 1334, a rebellion broke out in Mabar. While Muhammad went to stop it, a plague broke out at Bidar. This sickness made the Sultan ill and killed many soldiers. Because of these troubles, he moved the capital back to Delhi in 1335. This second move also caused many deaths.

Muhammad also tried a new way to use money. In 1330, he introduced what is called token currency. He made coins out of brass and copper. He wanted these to be worth the same as silver.

He was inspired by how people used coins in China. However, this plan did not work well. There was no strict way to control the making of coins. People began making fake coins at home using brass and copper. Soon, the coins became almost as worthless as stones. This made trade and business very hard for everyone.

In his later years, Muhammad led many large armies. In 1329, he raised an army of 370,000 soldiers. He also led an expedition to the Kumaon region in 1333.

Muhammad bin Tughluq died in 1351 while on a campaign in Sindh. His death happened as the Delhi Sultanate began to fall apart. His many big ideas changed the history of India forever.
