Alauddin became king after a very difficult series of events. He wanted more power and wealth for his own rule. In 1293, he raided a town called Bhilsa to get riches.

This raid showed him how much wealth was in the south. In 1296, he raided the kingdom of Devagiri. He used the treasure from this raid to help him fight his uncle. After a battle in July 1296, Alauddin became the new Sultan. He then marched to Delhi to claim his seat.

He also built a very large and strong army. He gave his soldiers a lot of money to stay loyal. He wanted to make sure his rule was very stable. Some people thought his first year as king was very happy. He gave out gold to show he was a generous leader. This helped many people accept him as their new ruler.

Alauddin also had to protect his land from many enemies. The Mongols from the Chagatai Khanate tried to invade India.

This made the Delhi Sultanate much larger than before. After Alauddin died in 1316, his son Qutbuddin Mubarak Shah took over.
