history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Bahmani Kingdom was a powerful land in the Deccan region. It was the first independent Muslim sultanate in that area. The kingdom began in 1347 during a time of great change. A leader named Zafar Khan helped start this new rule. Before he was a king, he was known as Hasan Gangu. Some stories say he started life as a simple field laborer. He later became a commander of one hundred horsemen.

Setting up the kingdom was a big task for the leaders. Zafar Khan moved from Delhi to the Deccan region. He saw the Deccan as a place of great bounty. After a rebellion, he was crowned as Alauddin Bahman Shah. This new rule brought many new people to the area. Scholars, saints, and explorers moved from North India to live there. They brought new ideas and ways of living to the Deccan.

The kingdom often fought with its neighbors. One major rival was the Vijayanagara Empire to the south. These two powers fought many wars over land and resources. Sometimes, the wars were very hard on the local people.

A famous leader named Mahmud Gawan helped the kingdom reach its largest size. He served as a high official from 1466 until 1481. Gawan was a talented poet and a great statesman. He built the Mahmud Gawan Madrasa to teach many subjects. This school was a center for both religious and secular learning.

He also organized the land into eight different areas to help rule it better.

Eventually, the Bahmani Kingdom began to face many hard problems. Different groups of nobles started to fight with one another. Five provincial governors also decided to break away. This caused the large kingdom to split into five smaller states. These new groups were known as the Deccan Sultanates. The last independent part of the kingdom ended in 1518. The total rule of the Bahmanis lasted for 180 years.
