Loni, Ghaziabad

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Loni is a busy city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It sits within the Ghaziabad district and is part of the larger Ghaziabad Metropolitan Region. The name of the city comes from the Hindi word "lon," which means salt. This name likely comes from the Sanskrit word "lavaṇa." Historians believe the name refers to the fact that the area once had a lot of salt. Today, Loni is a place where many people live and work near the capital region.

Traveling around Loni is a very active thing. You can reach the city by road, by train, or even by air. Many people use shared autos to get between places like Shahdara and Loni. There are also many buses that connect the city to places like Delhi and Meerut. The Delhi Metro also helps people travel through the Pink Line at Shiv Vihar station. This station is very important for the many people who live in the area. For air travel, the nearest airport is Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad.

Loni has a very long history that goes back many centuries. A document from the Mughal period called the Ain-i-Akbari mentions Loni as a place that produced money for the empire. Back then, it even had a fort made of bricks. In the 14th century, a leader named Timur arrived in the town and its fort. This happened just before a big battle against the Tughlaq Sultan Mahmud Shah. These old stories show that Loni has been an important spot for a very long time.

Many different things happen in Loni every single day. A huge gas pipeline reaches the city from Jamnagar in Gujarat. This is the world's longest pipeline used just for LPG, which is gas used for cooking. Large terminals in Loni help supply this gas to many parts of north India. In terms of people, the 2011 census showed that 516,082 people lived in the city. Most people there speak Hindi, though many also speak Urdu. The literacy rate is 75.24%, which is higher than the average for all of India.

While Loni is a place of movement and history, it also faces a hard job with its air. A report from 2025 named Loni as the most polluted city in the world. The air has a lot of tiny particles called PM2.5 in it. This happens because of many cars, factories, and growing cities in the area. During the winter months, the air can get very thick with smog. This is caused by the weather and smoke from nearby farms. It is a serious thing that people in the region are watching closely.
