Long ago, this land looked very different than it does today. During the time of the Delhi Sultanate, the area was covered in forests and marshlands. Rivers such as the Paondhoi, Dhamola, and Ganda Nala flowed through these wet lands. The weather was often humid, and people sometimes got sick from malaria. In 1340, a ruler named Muhammad bin Tughluq visited a holy man by the Paondhoi River. He named the region Shah-Haroonpur to honor the saint, Shah Haroon Chishti. The city's name comes from this very same person.

Many powerful empires have ruled Saharanpur over the centuries. The Mughal Empire held the area during the 1500s. During this time, a leader named Akbar gave the land to Raja Sah Ranveer Singh. He built the foundations of the city on an army camp site. Later, the Maratha Empire took control of the region. By 1803, the British East India Company also took power there. The city saw many battles and changes as different leaders came and went.

Today, Saharanpur is a very busy place with many people. In 2011, the city had a population of 705,478 people. Most people living there are Hindus, and about 45 percent are Muslims. Hindi is the most common language spoken in the streets. Many people also speak Urdu, Punjabi, or Haryanvi. The city is also part of a special plan called the Smart Cities Mission. This means the government is working to make the city better for everyone.

There are many interesting places to see in and around the city. One famous spot is the Company Garden, which is also called the Botanical Gardens. It was started before 1750 and is one of the oldest gardens in India. This garden helped bring tea plants from China to India long ago. Another important place is the Shakumbari Devi Temple. It is an ancient Hindu temple located in the Shivalik hills.
