Iltutmish was a man who rose from a hard life to become a great leader. As a young boy, his brothers sold him into slavery. He spent much of his youth being moved from place to place. Eventually, a leader named Qutb ud-Din Aibak bought him in Delhi. Iltutmish worked very well for Aibak. He was given important lands to manage. He even became a head of a bodyguard unit.

After Aibak died, Iltutmish took control of Delhi in 1211. He fought many battles to make his rule strong. He defeated rivals like Taj al-Din Yildiz and Nasir ad-Din Qabacha. He also brought many areas back under his control. Iltutmish was the first Muslim ruler to rule from Delhi. He is often called the true founder of the Delhi Sultanate.

He helped organize how the empire worked. He gave land to officers instead of paying them money. He also made new coins for people to use. These were the silver tanka and the copper jital. Iltutmish built many things like mosques and shrines. He even made a large water tank for travelers.
