Sena dynasty

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Sena dynasty was a powerful Hindu ruling family in the Indian subcontinent. They governed the Bengal region during the 11th and 12th centuries. At their strongest point, their empire controlled much of the north-eastern region. The Senas rose to power after the Pala dynasty ended their rule. This period is known as the early medieval period in Indian history.

The history of the Senas began with a man named Samanta Sena. He was a migrant from Karnataka, which is in southern India. Records called the Deopara Prashasti describe him as a Brahma-Kshatriya. This term suggests his family were Brahmins who became professional soldiers. Before Samanta Sena was born, his family likely settled in western Bengal. They first served the Pala rulers as sāmantas, which are local officials or subordinates, in the Rāḍha region. Over time, the Senas grew more powerful as the Pala influence declined.

Several key leaders helped build and expand the empire. Hemanta Sena took power and styled himself as a king in 1095 AD. He was followed by Vijaya Sena, who ruled for more than 60 years. This long reign helped create a stable foundation for the dynasty. Later, Ballala Sena conquered the city of Gaur from the Palas. He became the ruler of the Bengal Delta and established Nadia as his capital. Ballala Sena also married a princess from the Western Chalukya Empire in south India. This marriage shows that the Senas kept close social ties with southern regions.

Lakshmana Sena was another significant ruler who took the throne in 1179. He ruled for about 20 years and expanded the empire's reach. His territory stretched into Odisha and possibly as far as Varanasi. However, the dynasty faced a major challenge in 1203 or 1204 AD. A general named Muhammad Bin Bakhtiyar Khalji led an invasion. He was a protégé of Qutbuddin Aibak and served the Ghurid Empire. Khalji's forces captured the capital city of Nadia. This event is recorded in a historical text called the Tabaqat-i-Nasiri.

The Sena kings were great supporters of art, religion, and literature. They built many Hindu temples and monasteries across their lands. King Ballala Sena built the Dhakeshwari Temple in the 12th century. This famous temple is located in what is now Dhaka, Bangladesh. The dynasty also likely built the Sankara Gaureshwara temple in Kashmir. In their courts, famous poets like Jayadeva and Dhoyi flourished. These writers helped the development of the Bengali language during this era.

Daily life and trade involved complex systems of money. The Senas used silver coins called Purana or Dramma. A silver Purana weighed approximately 56.6 grains, also known as 32 ratis. Because precious metals were sometimes scarce, people used cowries for trade. Cowries are small shells used as a medium of exchange. Traditional math in Bengal showed that 1260 cowries equaled one silver coin. This ratio of 1:1280 helped people conduct business in local markets.

The dynasty began to decline under weaker rulers. Lakshmana Sena was the last major king to hold significant power. He was succeeded by his sons, Vishvarupa Sena and Keshava Sena. While the main empire faded around 1230 AD, some descendants ruled until at least 1245 or 1260 AD. The Sena legacy even reached Nepal in the 16th century. A new dynasty emerged there near the border of Bihar. They used the Sena name and claimed to be descendants of the Bengal rulers. One branch, the Sena dynasty of Makwanpur, even adopted the Maithili language for their state.
