The Nawabs ruled from a central city named Murshidabad. Even though they respected the Mughal Emperor in Delhi, they acted like independent kings. They even issued their own coins to show their strength. This region was very important to the whole Mughal Empire. It sent a huge amount of money to the imperial treasury.

This land was a busy center for making many things. This era was a time of growing industry and trade.

People made fine cotton muslin and beautiful silk cloth. They also built ships and made metalworks. Factories were found in many towns like Dhaka, Patna, and Murshidabad. The region produced gunpowder and saltpetre as well. Traders from all over the world came to visit. They stayed in large buildings called caravanserais to rest.

Murshid Quli Khan was the very first Nawab. He used to be a prime minister for the Mughals. In 1716, he moved the capital to a new city. He named this new city after himself.

The Nawabs were often helped by rich bankers. The Jagat Seth family was a very powerful group of money lenders. They helped the Nawabs and also helped European trading companies. This wealth helped the Nawabs support many beautiful arts. They loved music, painting, and local crafts.

Life was not always easy for the Nawabs. They had to fight many wars to protect their land.

For sixteen years, Alivardi Khan fought against the Maratha Empire. These raids caused much trouble for the people living there. Later, the British East India Company began to grow in power. The last independent Nawab was a man named Siraj-ud-Daulah. He worried about the British presence in his land. In 1756, he led a siege against the British base in Calcutta.

Control of the region changed forever after a big battle.
